SEA STATE 9: Proclamation by Charles Lim
SEA STATE 9: Proclamation features new works from Charles Lim’s SEA STATE project, which explores the complex understandings of sea and land in the fast-growing city-state of Singapore. For Lim’s 2018 return to Gillman Barracks, Future Perfect will present a selection of pieces from the project’s final chapter.
Unlike any other country, Singapore is literally a work in progress, where development is based not on terra firma but on a tabula rasa – an abstract grid for the modeling and realisation of an epic national sculpture. The island has grown by some thirty percent since independence through a massive process of land reclamation.
SEA STATE 9: Proclamation stems from Lim’s research into the process by which this ‘new’ land comes into being, complex rituals of sovereignty marrying techno-capitalist vision with legal and bureaucratic ingenuity. Lim reveals the means, at once mundane and magical, by which the nation’s landscape is continuously refreshed, along with the past and the future it imagines.
