Memories of Chinatown《回望牛车水》

Chinatown occupies a special place in the hearts of many Singaporeans. After all, it is the stage upon which the destinies of Chinese immigrants to the Nanyang have played out. Its streets, constructed by our forefathers, are present still, and all those who live among them are contributing to a new chapter in Chinatown’s history.

A nation’s memory comprises the images, scenes and memories recorded by its artists and by the public. Memories of Chinatown is set in a Chinatown vividly captured and presented in works by painters Ang Ah Tee, Choo Keng Kwang, Chua Mia Tee, and photographer Yip Cheong Fun. Against this backdrop are added the voices of old residents, evoking in their stories the people and things of a lost Chinatown.

Even now, the multi-layered history of Chinatown continues to be written. Let this documentary bring us back to the Chinatown of the 20th century and experience the scenes and tales that once permeated these familiar streets.
