Infinite Impressions – A Solo Exhibition by Zhang Chunlei

Zhang Chunlei’s most recent accomplishment was winning the 2020 UOB Painting of the Year Award for the Established Artist Category, Singapore. His winning entry, Art Stages Pasar 2020, depicts a crowded open market filled with cultural icons – Astro Boy, Sir Stamford Raffles, Mona Lisa and Spider Man.

Influenced by the Lao Zhuang Philosophy, which advocates artistic beauty and equilibrium, Zhang’s unique painting technique involves creating a series of tightly-woven dots, lines and planes, weaving a purposeful formation with alternating colours. This concept of fusion of figurative and abstract elements results in a stunning work of art.

Born in Shanghai in 1969, Zhang’s artistic career started at a young age when he was apprenticed to renowned Chinese painter, Master Jiang Fengbai. Zhang graduated from the Suzhou University School of Arts with a Professional Certificate in decoration design (1992). He continued his artistic training in Japan (1995) and obtained his MBA from the University of South Australia (2003). Zhang is currently living and working in Singapore and his art practice spans between Singapore and Shanghai, China.

In this 5th solo exhibition, Zhang creates a series of 33 paintings in oil and acrylic or Chinese ink. This exhibition showcases a colourful montage of his experiences and impressions: scenes and images that are current and familiar, yet highlighting his affinity with elements of cultural tradition.

Since 2000, Zhang has had many successful solo and group exhibitions and won many accolades and awards. Zhang’s artworks have been acquired by private and corporate collectors such as UOB Singapore, Far East Plaza, Meritus Mandarin Hotel, Singapore, Marriot Hotel (Beijing), Yucun Art Museum, Suzhou Daily (China), Shangri-La Hotel, Legend Hotel, Times Square Hotel and Grand Margherita Hotel (Malaysia).
