In Studio: 51 Jalan Pemimpin

For an artist, a studio is a critical site, which is physically and mentally vital for growth in creative thinking. In Sai (aka Chen Sai Hua Kuan)’s past 26 years of artistic career, the artist has been fortunate to inhabit studios in several towns and cities, including Berlin, London, Oxford, La Rochelle, Longni, Aberystwyth, Lille and Singapore. Beyond physical spaces, these studios are social bodies with their own histories and contexts that inform the artist's practice.

In Studio: 51 Jalan Pemimpin specifically refers to the recent artworks produced in Sai's current studio at 51 Jalan Pemimpin, located in a run-down industry building in Singapore. The exhibition consists of latest works created out of readymade objects that are commonly observed and used in daily life. Staged in quirky and unexpected situations using strategies of humour, contradiction and irony, it aims to challenge conventional associations with utility and cast new light on how we perceive things around us.
