Synopsis

Tran-Slates merges “slate bench” and “translates” in its title, exploring how cultural heritage can be reinterpreted through contemporary design. Its form draws from the artistry of master joss stick maker Albert Tay, once a sculptor of dragons rising from giant joss sticks, now shaping the flowing strokes of 四马路 (Si Beh Lor) also known as Waterloo Street, found in Singapore’s creative district. Designed by Jesvin Yeo and curated by Justin Loke of Vertical Submarine, the bench becomes a marker of memory, identity and belonging.
