Synopsis

Singapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition revisits the foundations of Singapore’s modern art through a critical rethinking of the term “pioneer.” Bringing together seminal works from key figures of the Nanyang period and beyond, the exhibition reframes pioneering not as a fixed generation or style, but as an open historical position shaped by cross-cultural exchange, migration, and lived experience, revealing how modernity in Singapore laid the groundwork for contemporary artistic thought.
