Synopsis

Singapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition revisits the foundations of Singapore’s modern art through a critical rethinking of the term “pioneer.” Bringing together seminal works from key figures of the Nanyang period and beyond, the exhibition reframes pioneering not as a fixed generation or style, but as an open historical position shaped by cross-cultural exchange, migration, and lived experience, revealing how modernity in Singapore laid the groundwork for contemporary artistic thought.

Chen Wen Hsi, Cheong Soo Pieng, Liu Kang, Chen Chong Swee, Lee Man Fong, Sun Yee, Choo Keng Kwang, Chen Cheng Mei, Chua Mia Tee, and Tan Swie Hian
